Cyrus gained fame as the namesake character on Disney Channel’s hit show “Hannah Montana,” quickly becoming a teen idol and chart-topper with songs such as “Best of Both Worlds” and “Party in the USA.” When she quit the show at age 16, she rejected her squeaky-clean image, sporting sexy outfits and starring in raunchy music videos. She made an infamous media blunder on her 18th birthday, being caught on tape smoking the hallucinogenic herb salvia.
Now 19, the star met Hemsworth, 22, on the set of the romance film “The Last Song” in 2009. The two have been dating on and off ever since. According to People magazine, Hemsworth proposed on May 31 with a 3.5-carat diamond ring. As of yet, no wedding date has been announced.
“I’m so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam,” the star told People.
“Thank you for all the love today. I’m happy to share this news with you all. I feel like all my dreams are coming true,” she posted on Twitter.
Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley’s father both in real life and on “Hannah Montana,” said he was ecstatic.
“All I ever hoped for as a daddy was to see my kids reach their dreams. To find happiness, peace of mind, and someday know true love,” he told HollywoodLife.com.
Not everyone, however, is as happy for the couple as Miley’s father. Many fans worry the stars are too young for such a serious commitment. Some, however, such as “The Talk’s” Sharon Osbourne, believe otherwise:
“I think that she is 19, but in her head she is an old soul. She has lived 19 lives in 19 years… She is an accomplished young woman, who knows what she wants at this time in her life,” she said.
What do you think? Is Miley too young to get married?
